The new English Missal will come into full use on the 1st Sunday of Advent. One of the reasons for its introduction is the requirement that the translation should follow the original Latin more closely. The current translation served us well for 36 years but, even after a few years of use, those familiar with other language translations realised that often there were key phrases and rich biblical allusions missing from the English translation. This new translation addresses some of these weaknesses. Those familiar with the Irish Mass will notice how closely the new English Missal matches the original Irish translation
How will it happen?
- From the 11th September our diocese will begin to use the new translation of the people’s prayers e.g. ‘the Gloria and the Creed. These texts will be automatically introduced in your missalettes. We will also begin to use the changed people’s responses and to facilitate this we will have them in this missalette for the first few weeks. The changes are shown in bold print.
- From the 1st Sunday of Advent, 27th November the remainder of the prayers in the celebration of the Eucharist that are led by the priest will come into use.
‘Introducing the New Missal’ Question and Answer leaflets prepared by the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference will be available on the tables at the doors of the church next Sunday 11th September
