25th July - 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - THOUGHTS ON THE READINGS 1st Reading: Genesis 18: 20-32 The Jewish people honour people like Abraham and Moses for many reasons but perhaps particularly because they were blessed with ‘conversations’ with God. Here Abraham please for Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of a hundred just people. God shows tenderness and compassion with justice. The mercy, love and forgiveness of God knows no ends. God listens to the prayers of his people. Second Reading: Colossians 2: 12-14 Paul outlines how closely his understanding of Christ’s death and resurrection is bound up with the meaning of Christian life, starting from the ‘death and burial’ that is our Baptism. In Baptism we become the adopted children of God. Gospel Reading: Luke 11: 1-13 We are to ask our Father for the bread that is necessary. We are to ask, to seek and to knock trusting that we will be cared for. Just as a child trusts his parents to give a fish or an egg instead of a scorpion or a snake, Jesus invites us to trust that God will give us what we need.
1st August - 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - THOUGHTS ON THE READINGS 1st Reading: Ecclesiastes: 1:2, 2: 21-23 Our earthly lives are grounded in the routines of education, career and all the daily tasks that give structure to our lives. But life is surely more than this - God is tin only enduring constant in our lives Second Reading: Colossians 3: 1-3, 9-11 Paul spells our the consequences of our baptism for our lives. Our life in Christ means breaking down the barriers that kept people apart. Gospel Reading: Luke 12; 13-21 The mystery of this parable is to be found in the chasm between the things of the world and the things of heaven. Jesus constantly urges us forward to a life of grace.
8th August - 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - THOUGHTS ON THE READINGS 1st Reading: Wisdom 18: 6-9 The text is taken from a prayer of thanksgiving to God for having rescued the people from slavery in Egypt. It is in thanksgiving for so much the Lord has given. Second Reading: Hebrews 11: 1-2, 8-19 ‘Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for’ - Abraham set out for the Promised Land not knowing where he was going. The foundations of our lives are not built on clay but on the steady rock of God’s promise of eternal life. Gospel Reading: Luke 12: 32-48 Faith is not a passive way of living. The watchful slaves make plans for the future. At every turn there is an opportunity to be active for the good of the Kingdom. By responding to these opportunities we light lamps of faith, revealing to the world that God is the head of our household
15th August - Feast of the Assumption - THOUGHTS ON THE READINGS 1st Reading: Apocalypse 11: 19, 12: 1-6, 10 The sun that clothes the Blessed Virgin is reminiscent of the light of Jesus. The moon is thought to represent the La w of Moses. Arount her head revolve twelve stars, the twelve apostles who proclaim and reveal Jesus together with her. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15: 20-26 The community were grappling with the deaths that had taken place and grew impatient waiting for the second coming of Christ. Paul explains to them that these souls are assured of resurrection because Jesus has risen first. Gospel Reading: Luke 1: 39-56 Mary’s spontaneous hymn of joy reflects the ideal of the Christian life. Her faith, devotion and virtue make God visible - by faith we make God visible because we reflect him more closely. As a model of faith, Mary is indeed our worthy intercessor.
