Letter from Haiti
Hello All,

Below is an email I got from a young Haitian friend, with whom I studied. He is a recently ordained priest. In the mail, he gives a first-hand  description of the situation in Port Au Prince, and thanks the people of Ireland for the prayers and help we are sending. He has given permission for it to be used in homilies this weekend. I felt it was appropriate to share it with the Holy Redeemer Parish.
all the best,

Fr. Colin

Haiti, Wednesday 27th January 2010.

Dear Colin

People here are living in fear. Every day there are strong aftershocks that cause panic. People dont know what tomorrow will bring. The population have lost everything. People are wondering what the months to come will be like in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

A week ago I was in Port au Prince. I saw the extent of the damage. It was awful. I saw my family sleeping on the street with everyone else. The whole town smelt of death. Desolation was everywhere.

Life in the capital is almost unbearable, and now the provinces are overcrowded with the crowds of people fleeing the capital. Very soon life is going to be very hard for thousands of families.

We Oblates of Mary Immaculate lost our Residence and Theology Building. One of our students died in the earthquake.

This is a picture of the reality we are living.

I ask you to pray for Haiti, that our country may be reborn out of the ruins.

We are counting on your prayers and your Christian solidarity.

In the name of the People of Haiti, I thank the people of Ireland and in particular the Diocese of Dublin for all that you are doing to come to the aid of my people.

Jean Luc Bordeau, Oblate of Mary Immaculate.
